Macey

Meet Macey!! This little lady has had a rough beginning but now that her body has healed, she is ready to head to New England and find her forever home. Her foster via our partner, Dog4U has given us an amazing bio for her. It’s worth the read:

“Macey is a spayed 42 pound mixed breed gal who has just turned 2 years old. She adores people, has done well with children, and gets along well with dogs of all sizes and ages. She is house broken, does not need to be crated and loves her couch time. She also loves to run zoomies in the fenced yard at her foster home, enticing any dog that will play with her to join the fun. This sweet girl lived a life of horror until she was saved from her misery on January 12th of 2024. Let’s go back in time to what happened to poor Macey before she got the help she needed.

She lived on a chain for most of her first year of life. While chained to a telephone pole with nothing but a piece of propped up plywood for shelter, her terrible owners neglected and used her. While backing their car out of their driveway, they ran her over (while chained to a pole); crushing both her hips. Hearing her squealing in pain, they drove off to run their errands like nothing ever happened. Having puppies once wasn’t enough. They decided to USE her again for puppies as she sat helpless on a chain with shattered bones. To make matters worse, once she had her puppies, she would not let her pups feed as she could not lay still enough due to her agonizing pain. They took her pups and put them on another mom who had also had pups. Then they left Macey chained, two crushed hips, and decided to stop feeding her and let her slowly die chained in pain. They literally admitted to withholding food as she was no longer useful. They had zero remorse. No words can explain how I feel about this.

She had to be held for support just to stand and you could see the sadness in her face, at one point she closes her eyes to bear the pain. She had two crushed hips, tons of hair loss and rashes, a major double ear infection, starving, ribs exposed, and still full of milk from just giving birth in this extremely neglected condition.
Macy’s condition was very poor when we saved her, one femoral head was crushed into powder, and on the other leg it was shattered with free floating bone pieces – like breaking a plate.

She was taken to a fantastic orthopedic specialist to help ease her suffering. What this poor girl went through is unimaginable. The surgery was more invasive than a standard FHO due to the injuries, due to level of damage to both legs and that she had been left to heal and suffer for at least 5 months.

They cut the femoral heads off which is normal in any FHO. She had a lot of free-floating bone shards causing a lot of pain. She was literally in less pain the morning after a double hip replacement than when she stumbled into the vet clinic, which is rare and extremely sad. The vet chose to do both surgeries at the same time because her other leg could not have supported her body weight if the surgeries had been done one at a time. Now a new joint has been created on both hips and she doesn’t miss a beat. Time, specific exercises and therapy achieved this miraculous recovery. The surgeons have released her for normal exercise and play time, focused exercise (power walking) will be important to continue to build up muscle, to continue to stretch soft tissue and ligaments and improve range of motion. Also, lots of zoomies and play time!

LOOKING UP –
Macey is now a vibrant young girl who she is so lovely and friendly. She is completely house broken. She absolutely loves to go hiking in the woods. She gets so excited she can’t stop wiggling her butt as she trots down the trail. She is a great house guest, awesome for vet visits. She’s the total package.
She was fostered in a home with three other dogs, one being a 15 year old Chihuahua that she snuggles with constantly, and was besties with another foster puppy (a Pug). They were inseparable.

Except for building up her thigh muscles more, she is in the perfect body condition and weight for her body frame. She is a half pint doggie and will never be a big girl. Macey seems to do better on fish based protein rather than chicken so we recommend continuing that. She is not a food motivated gal, pets and loving is where it’s at! She is not especially hungry in the AM and generally takes her food about 8am. She is a very special dog and needs to be with a family who has great compassion and love and who will adore her immensely. She needs a family who will help her forget everything that happened to her in the times before.

She loves car rides, and oh the COUCH! Oh yes, she is very much a house hippo and a big couch potato. She is the best cuddler! She needs a home with a fenced yard so she can run to her heart’s desire. She loves to snooze out on the deck while sunning. She gets along with all dogs very nicely. When she plays with other dogs, she can get a bit rough/overzealous due to excitement (nothing mean or out of control). I just say “stop Macey” with a sharp tone or point at her and say “NO” and she will stop right away and wind down. When she rolls on her back in the yard she grunts and grumbles in the cutest way. It is her way of expressing her joy. She is pretty quiet in the home.

She is a 10K dog, it was very expensive to save her but so worth it. Look how great she turned out, she deserves the good life and to be loved beyond measure.

She is a very pretty girl. We will miss her always. So glad we could help her and be her stepping stone.”
